The French national football team is gearing up for the 2024 European Championship in Germany and national coach Didier Deschamps has made his selection. Bayern professionals Kingsley Coman and Dayot Upamecano are among the 25 players who will represent France.
Although Kingsley Coman is currently struggling with an adductor injury, he is guaranteed a place in the European Championship squad. The decision underlines the importance that Deschamps attaches to the nimble winger. Victor Catalina from AZ recently reported on Coman’s progress: „Despite visible discomfort towards the end of his training session on Tuesday, the 27-year-old made a good impression overall.
Coman is expected to be fully recovered for the European Championship opener against Austria on 17 June. However, his involvement could still be limited at the start of the tournament, and a full 90-minute workload seems unlikely for the time being.
Another surprise from Deschamps‘ squad announcement was the nomination of N’Golo Kanté, who is back in the national squad after an absence of almost two years. The midfielder, who won the 2018 World Cup with France, returns to the big stage from Al Ittihad.
Upamecano also in the squad
Dayot Upamecano, who has recently been heavily criticised in Munich, is also in the French squad. Ex-Bayern professional Benjamin Pavard is also in the squad for the European Championship in Germany. The centre-back played a strong season at Inter Milan. Ex-Bayern defender Lucas Hernandez from Paris Saint-Germain has to miss out due to a cruciate ligament rupture.
The French team’s preparations include test matches against Luxembourg and Canada before travelling to Paderborn for their European Championship quarters. In addition to Austria, the group stage also includes matches against the Netherlands and Poland. France’s aim will be to continue the success of recent major tournaments and advance deep into the knockout phase.
