The search for a coach at FC Bayern is picking up speed again. After the recent wave of rejections, the Munich club appears to have two concrete favourites. As has now become known, Max Eberl is not only in talks with Thomas Tuchel about staying on, the record champions‘ sporting director is also in contact with Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian is even rumoured to be Bayern’s preferred solution.

Who will be the new head coach at FC Bayern? This question has been on the minds of Bayern bosses for weeks. Max Eberl and Co. have not yet come up with a concrete answer.

While reports have recently been circulating that Thomas Tuchel is increasingly likely to stay, FCB appear to have another option up their sleeve: Roberto De Zerbi.

According to BR, Bayern are not only currently in talks with Tuchel, but are also in contact with the 44-year-old Italian.

De Zerbi is Eberl’s preferred candidate

According to BR, De Zerbi is the favoured candidate of sporting director Max Eberl. Tuchel, on the other hand, would „only“ be plan B should the Brighton & Hove Albion coach be left empty-handed.

Eberl is a big fan of De Zerbi, especially of the way he makes his teams play football. According to reports, there have already been concrete talks about the squad composition for the 2024/25 season.

Bayern bosses are sceptical

The problem: De Zerbi is not as popular with all Bayern managers as he is with Eberl. In addition to the language barrier – De Zerbi does not speak German and his English is not said to be the best either – he is not necessarily considered to be easy to look after. He is also said to place „very, very high demands on the clubs and the players“. At the same time, he is „not necessarily the great man-catcher“, as sports journalist and England expert Raphael Honigstein from The Atheltic reports.

Another dilemma: unlike Tuchel, De Zerbi would cost just under 15 million euros in transfer fees. FCB would have to pay that much to activate his release clause. His large coaching team and support staff would also be an additional burden on Munich’s salary account.
