Zinedine Zidane was already considered a candidate in FC Bayern’s search for a coach, but then seemed to have moved somewhat out of the focus of the Munich management. Now, however, the Bayern bosses have apparently contacted the Frenchman’s management.
Is Zinedine Zidane once again a hot candidate in FC Bayern’s coaching search? According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, Munich bosses have contacted the French star’s management in recent days to express their interest and find out whether he would be willing to return as coach.
Zidane has not worked as a coach for almost three years: he left Real Madrid in June 2021. In two spells as coach of the Whites, Zidane won the Champions League three times, the UEFA Super Cup twice, became Club World Champion twice with the team, won two Spanish league titles and the Spanish Super Cup twice. in 2017, he was voted FIFA World Coach of the Year.
Language barrier a problem for Zidane?
However, the language barrier could be a problem for Zidane at FC Bayern: The 51-year-old Zidane speaks French, Spanish and Italian, but no German and virtually no English. Communication with the players and the Bayern management could therefore be difficult for him.
For a long time, the motto at FC Bayern was that the head coach should also speak German. However, FCB President Herbert Hainer recently explained: „Not speaking German is not an exclusion criterion for us. We are looking for the best solution for FC Bayern and we also have an international team. A coach can also act non-verbally.“
TV pundit Lothar Matthäus criticised Zidane, however: „English should be the minimum you have to speak as a coach at Bayern.“
The current national coach Julian Nagelsmann, who could return to FCB after his release in March 2023, and Roberto De Zerbi from Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Premier League were recently considered top candidates for the coaching position at the German record champions.
