The future plans of the young FC Bayern talent Paul Wanner are a topic of conversation. The 18-year-old, who is currently on loan to second division club SV 07 Elversberg, faces the important decision of which national team he would like to play for in the future – Germany or Austria?
According to Sky, Austria’s national team coach Ralf Rangnick is very interested in Wanner’s abilities. He had even considered nominating him for the upcoming international matches. However, Wanner has decided to continue playing for the German U20 team for the time being. However, this should not be seen as a final decision on the national team issue. Wanner himself emphasises that he wants to take the necessary time to make this ground-breaking decision.
A year ago, the talented midfielder had already decided in favour of playing for the German youth teams without making a final decision. „He wants to continue on his path with the DFB without making a final decision,“ explained U21 national coach Antonio di Salvo at the time.
Wanner convinces in Elversberg
Wanner, who played a total of 15 international matches for the German U17s and U18s and has also featured for the U20s, is spoilt for choice thanks to his German-Austrian heritage. His professional career began early: he made his Bundesliga debut for FC Bayern at the age of just 16 years and 15 days. This made him the second youngest player in the history of the league.
His move on loan to SV 07 Elversberg in September was primarily intended to give him match practice at professional level. Jochen Sauer, director of youth development at FC Bayern, emphasised the importance of this move for Wanner: „It is now important for Paul’s further development to get continuous match practice in a professional league. Promoted Elversberg has offered him this opportunity in the 2nd division.“
Wanner has already impressed in the current season at Elversberg. In 19 games, he has scored four goals and set up three others.
