Bayern Munich are reportedly “in advanced talks” to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano this winter.

Upamecano is a popular figure on the transfer market, and has been linked to Premier League giants Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to add a partner for Harry Maguire, and Chelsea are looking for a long-term replacement for Thiago Silva.

Meanwhile, Liverpool need to bring in defensive reinforcements after long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip.

Despite Hansi Flick claiming that Bayern wouldn’t be making any signings this transfer window, multiple weeks of inconsistent performances on the backline have prompted the Bundesliga champions to shore up their defence.

According to German journalist Alfred Draxler, Bayern have identified the 22-year-old as a potential replacement for David Alaba.

“I know that Bayern have been in contact with Upamecano’s agent and that talks are advanced,” Draxler told Sport 1 (h/t Marca).

Alaba is out of contract in the summer and has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Upamecano reportedly has a release clause of €42m and is contracted to Leipzig until 2023.

So far, he has made 14 appearances in the Bundesliga this season and has played five times in the Champions League.

Back in December, RB Leipzig chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff acknowledged that his team is attracting a lot of attention from top clubs in Europe.

“We have a squad that is very broad in terms of quality,” he said. “So, we will sell top performers again if it makes financial sense and we can cope with it from a sporting point of view.”
