Following head coach Vincent Kompany’s collapse, FC Bayern will have to do without the Belgian. Prior to this incident, he had been complaining of a persistent viral infection and had already had to scale back his activities on the sidelines.
On Friday, after collapsing following Bayern’s training session, he was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he underwent tests for several days.
Max Eberl stated from the outset that they first needed to determine a diagnosis. In recent days, Kompany had been feeling slightly better and had already sought limited contact with Bayern officials. However, it was still clear that he would need a longer break.
Eberl Announces Kompany’s Diagnosis
Ahead of Bayern’s cup match against 1. FC Magdeburg, there was good news regarding the coach. Sporting Director Max Eberl told ARD: “To be honest, he’s doing well under the circumstances. He was discharged from the hospital today—that’s the best possible news for all of us!”
This means the coach is on the road to recovery and no longer needs to be under constant medical supervision. A diagnosis has finally been confirmed. „The doctors know what it is. It’s meningitis that caused this episode. He can now go home and begin rehabilitation—which means rest and medication—and then he’ll be available again soon.“

However, there is still no timeline. “When the doctors say he’s cleared to return to work, he’ll certainly say he’s ready to go back to work. We don’t have a timeline; that’s why we’ve been talking in terms of weeks from the start—we’re giving him all the time in the world. He has a condition that could affect any of us, and the doctors have also said that a connection to the virus is unlikely. As I said, we’re giving him all the time in the world.”
