There could soon be a surprising departure at FC Bayern: a traditional club wants to snap up an important FCB employee.
According to BILD, second division club Dynamo Dresden are interested in Nils Schmadtke, the current head of the record champions‘ scouting department. The traditional club is looking for a successor following the departure of sporting director Thomas Brendel – and according to the report, Schmadtke is at the top of their list.
The 36-year-old took over responsibility for the entire scouting department at Säbener Straße in October 2024 and works closely with sporting director Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund. Schmadtke, son of experienced Bundesliga manager Jörg Schmadtke, is considered one of the leading figures in modern player scouting.
Under his leadership, the department at FC Bayern was completely restructured: campus and licensed player scouting were merged, and Schmadtke relied on a combination of intensive data analysis and increased live scouting. The aim was to increase the permeability between the youth and professional sectors – an approach that is regarded internally in Munich as a major step forward.
Eberl was already raving about his colleague’s work in the summer: „He has already found some very good players. He has a good nose! He knows the market very well and has a very, very good network. That also helps us to bring the campus and licensed areas closer together.“
A departure after just one year in office would therefore be a bitter loss for FC Bayern – especially as Schmadtke is closely involved in long-term squad planning and is considered a key figure in the newly established scouting department.
Is Nils Schmadtke moving from FC Bayern to Dynamo Dresden?
Dynamo Dresden, on the other hand, is currently in a crisis mood. Following the dismissal of Brendel, supervisory board member Dr. Jürg Kasper temporarily took over the sporting management. „With over ten years of experience on the club’s supervisory board, Dr. Jürg Kasper has the necessary knowledge of important day-to-day business issues and the upcoming strategic tasks,“ explained supervisory board chairman Jens Heinig.
The second division club is currently in second-last place in the table and has been waiting weeks for its second win of the season. In order to initiate a sporting turnaround, a new sporting director should be presented by the beginning of December if possible, who can directly influence the squad planning in the winter.

In addition to Schmadtke, Sebastian Freis (formerly of Karlsruher SC) and ex-Dynamo Sören Gonther (currently of Hessen Kassel) are also considered possible candidates, according to BILD.
For Bayern, the departure of Nils Schmadtke would be a setback in the strategically important area of scouting – especially as his work at Säbener Straße is seen as groundbreaking for the future.
