The upcoming Champions League semi-final between FC Bayern Munich and Real Madrid promises to be a football festival. However, one personnel decision could cause mixed feelings for the German record champions: referee Clement Turpin. The choice of the Frenchman as referee casts shadows from the past, but also leaves room for positive interpretations.

On Tuesday, two football giants will meet in the Champions League semi-final at the Allianz Arena in Munich. RMC Sport reports that Clement Turpin, known for his strict interpretation of the rules, will be in charge of the match between FC Bayern and Real Madrid. The 41-year-old is no stranger to European football. He has already caused heated debates on several occasions.

Memories of last year, when Turpin refereed the quarter-final second leg against Manchester City, are still fresh in the minds of Bayern supporters. The 1:1 draw not only resulted in elimination from the competition, but also brought with it numerous controversies. From a red card for Upamecano, which was later rescinded, to a controversial penalty and Tuchel’s dismissal – emotions ran high.

Bayern without defeat under Turpin

Despite the harsh criticism that Turpin subsequently received – kicker criticised a lack of consistency in his decisions – there is another side to the coin. Under Turpin’s management, FC Bayern has not lost in the Champions League so far.

Five wins and three draws testify to a successful past. These include a 7:1 win over Red Bull Salzburg and a 3:0 win at Chelsea FC. These statistics could be a good omen, because even if the past calls for a certain amount of caution, the figures show a remarkable success rate.

Confirmation from UEFA is still pending, but if Turpin does indeed blow the whistle for the semi-final first leg, all eyes will be on not only the players, but also the man with the whistle.

  1. Oh Mama, wir sind verloren! Glückwunsch zum Einzug ins CL-Finale RM! Eh ho!
