Tom Bischof put in a strong performance in the 7-0 win over Union Berlin. Now, the young Bayern player has some special weeks ahead of him with the DFB.
Tom Bischof was on the field for just 27 minutes—but that was enough for the 21-year-old to make a lasting impression in FC Bayern’s 7-0 win over Union Berlin .
Vincent Kompany brought Bischof on in the 63rd minute to replace Aleksandar Pavlovic. At that point, Munich was already leading 4-0. The German U-21 national team player fit right in and was directly involved in two more goals shortly afterward.
With the score at 6–0, Bischof played a strong long ball to Michael Olise. The Frenchman controlled the ball with technical finesse, rounded Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow, and finished by hitting the inside post.
Just three minutes later, Bischof set up Olise again. This time, he set up the Frenchman with a backheel before Olise completed his hat trick. Two assists within a few minutes—an extremely effective performance for the midfielder.
Bischof now has a chance to prove himself to Klopp as well
This performance should prove particularly valuable for Bischof. Just a few days earlier, the 21-year-old had been given the chance to start in the 2-1 win over SV Elversberg. He wasn’t able to make a lasting impression in that game, however.
Against Union, however, it was a different story. Bischof didn’t have to dictate Bayern’s play; instead, he joined a team that was already clicking and was able to showcase his qualities. Above all, his two assists demonstrated the creativity he can bring to Bayern’s game.
This strong performance comes at the perfect time for Bischof. During the upcoming international break, an unusual doubleheader awaits him with the DFB. First, the midfielder will join the German U21 team, of which he is the captain. There, the team will face Latvia on September 26 and Malta on September 30 in European Championship qualifiers.
Afterward, Bischof will move up to the senior national team. National team coach Jürgen Klopp has included the Bayern player in the second part of his expanded squad for the Nations League matches against Serbia on October 1 and Greece on October 4.
Klopp had coordinated this plan in advance with both U21 coach Antonio Di Salvo and Kompany. “He doesn’t play three games every week either, so he’ll play with the U21s first and then join us,” explained the national team coach.
This means Bischof will have plenty of opportunities in the coming weeks to gain playing time while also impressing Klopp. After all, competition for a spot in central midfield at FC Bayern remains fierce. Joshua Kimmich and Pavlovic are currently the starters, and behind them, Bischof is fighting for playing time.
After his setback against Elversberg, the 21-year-old gave the right response against Union. Two assists in 27 minutes were a pretty strong statement of his abilities.
