Michael Olise has developed into one of the best wingers in the world at FC Bayern. The Frenchman impresses with his technique, his dynamism, and above all, his exquisite left foot. For Uli Hoeneß, the 24-year-old is quite reminiscent of a Bayern legend—in one area, the honorary president even ranks Olise ahead of Arjen Robben.
When you watch Michael Olise play soccer, you’re quickly reminded of Arjen Robben: high-speed dribbles down the right wing, drives toward the goal, and frequent left-footed shots into the far corner. Uli Hoeneß also sees strong parallels between the two players.
Hoeneß has nothing but praise for Olise: “His incredible technique, his willingness to run, and above all, his precision in finishing are extraordinary,” the club’s patron told the AZ.
Hoeneß is particularly impressed by how Olise beats his opponents. According to Hoeneß, the Frenchman waits patiently for the right moment before unleashing his tremendous dynamism.
Olise “always picks the right moment” and waits “until the opponent is off balance or has shifted his weight incorrectly—and then he’s gone,” Hoeneß said.
But for the Bayern boss, it’s not just Olise’s dribbling that’s extraordinary. He’s also impressed by the speed with which the 24-year-old then gets a shot off: “He barely needs any time to look for the shot. That’s unusual,” Hoeneß emphasized.
Even more precise than Robben?
Given these skills, a comparison with Arjen Robben is inevitable. The Dutchman defined an era at FC Bayern and was particularly known for his famous cut-ins from the right wing and his finishing with his left foot.
Olise, too, frequently comes down the right flank and then cuts inside. For Hoeneß, there are therefore definite parallels between the two.
However, the Bayern boss sees the current attacking star as even stronger in one specific area: “Arjen was similar in that regard, but I think Michael has even more precision with his irresistible left-footed shot into the top left corner,” Hoeneß explained.
Olise’s stats are impressive
It’s no surprise that Hoeneß is enthusiastic about his protégé. Olise transferred from Crystal Palace to Munich in 2024 for around 53 million euros and quickly developed into an absolutely exceptional player.
In his 109 competitive matches for FC Bayern so far, the Frenchman has scored 44 goals and set up 55 more. He delivered once again against Stuttgart to kick off the new season. Unsurprisingly, the record champions are already looking to extend the winger’s contract for the long term.
