The German record champions are strongly represented at the upcoming World Cup. 17 players make up FC Bayern’s second-largest contingent at the finals after Manchester City, which has 19 World Cup players
For Herbert Hainer, this figure is an indication of the club’s international standing, as the Bayern President told BILD: „This proves that FC Bayern is an absolute top address in world soccer“
Hainer also links the strong Munich presence to expectations of the German national team. In his view, the DFB selection always had a special basis in successful tournament years when several Bayern players played a central role: „The national team has always done well when it had a Bayern block. We saw that in 1974, 1990 and 2014.“
Hainer hopes for Germany in the final
Hainer also has ambitious personal wishes for the tournament. „First of all, I’m a soccer fan and a fan of the German national team. That’s why I hope that the German national team plays very well and gets as far as possible – preferably to the final,“ he said. He clearly categorizes another early exit like in 2018 and 2022: that „cannot be the DFB’s ambition“
At FC Bayern itself, the goals also remain maximum. Hainer made it clear: „At FC Bayern, we always have the goal of winning all the titles that are possible. Winning the Champions League is of course very, very difficult. We have seen once again this season how close it was – we would also have deserved to reach the final“
Commenting on the last Champions League season, he added: „We only lost two games – against the two finalists. You can see the quality FC Bayern has and what is possible here.“
