Vincent Kompany is the new coach of FC Bayern. But where does the connection come from? Did his former coach at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, possibly have an influence on the decision?

There is every indication that FC Bayern has finally found a successor to Thomas Tuchel. It is highly likely that Vincent Kompany from relegated Premier League side FC Burnley will take over the coaching job at Säbener Straße. After the clubs agreed on a transfer fee of 10 to 12 million euros, the 38-year-old Belgian now has a contract ready to sign until 2027.

In an interview with ARD, former Bayern star Bastian Schweinsteiger expressed his surprise at the decision to appoint such a comparatively young and inexperienced coach. „I would have said: ‚That can’t be‘,“ the 39-year-old replied when asked how he would have reacted if Kompany’s appointment had been announced immediately after Thomas Tuchel’s departure.

Did Guardiola suggest Kompany to FC Bayern?

Schweinsteiger does, however, have a suspicion as to how the decision to bring Kompany to the Isar was made. He revealed that „Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß still have a very good relationship with Pep Guardiola.“ And he thinks very highly of Kompany. That’s why Schweinsteiger can well imagine „that there was communication.“

After all, Guardiola was Kompany’s coach for three years after his time at FC Bayern. During this time, the Belgian was an undisputed regular in Manchester City’s central defence and captained the team through the Premier League. Schweinsteiger is also unable to answer conclusively whether this experience will help the Belgian, because „Bayern Munich is not an easy place to play, but it is a huge opportunity for Kompany to prove himself.“
