FC Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel has faced a lot of headwind this season. Now ex-Bayern captain Philipp Lahm has joined the ranks of his critics.

Former Bayern star Philipp Lahm has criticised coach Thomas Tuchel. In an interview with BILD am Sonntag, Lahm criticised the coach’s failure to bring stability to the Munich side: „Now, right at the end, things are starting to fall into place: Neuer, de Ligt, Dier, Kimmich, Goretzka, Musiala and Kane are on the pitch in every important game. That’s seven players plus Sané, when he’s fit, who are set. We haven’t worked on that enough. You can’t build a team like that!“

Lahm continued: „I’m not a coach. But I can say that if the roles are clearly defined, the players come together and become a team. If not, the opposite is the case.“

In the Champions League quarter-final win against Arsenal, however, Lahm saw a „Bayern team that works together, especially in defence. They have found each other,“ he stated.

Lahm: „Continuity is enormously important“

Next season, Bayern want to strike back after losing the championship to Leverkusen. Lahm predicted: „If the club regains stability and continuity in important management positions and finds a team with a framework, FC Bayern will return to the top.“

However, the 40-year-old diagnosed that this would require more consistency at the club: „Continuity at all levels is hugely important. That wasn’t there: no stability, no calm. There has been unrest for years – from the management to the coach. In addition, many transfers were made that were not successful.“

Lahm captained Bayern from 2011 to 2017 and won a total of eight German championships, six DFB Cup victories and the 2013 Champions League with the Munich team. He is currently working as tournament director for the upcoming European Championship in Germany.
