A new, surprising name has emerged in the search for a new coach for FC Bayern Munich: Thiago Motta, currently coach of Bologna. After Thomas Tuchel’s departure in the summer and the cancellation of Xabi Alonso, Bayern are urgently looking for a coach to rebuild the struggling Bayern team.
Thiago Motta, who has caused a furore with his work at Bologna, could provide a breath of fresh air at the German record champions. His team has surprisingly established itself in the upper regions of the Italian Serie A table. In addition, Motta’s contract expires next summer, which could save Bayern some difficult negotiations.
According to his advisor Alessandro Canovi, they are keeping a close eye on the market. „The confirmation that Xabi Alonso is staying at Bayer Leverkusen has opened up some important candidates for Liverpool FC and FC Bayern Munich. And then there’s Barcelona,“ Canovi told the Italian sports portal Tuttomercato.
He emphasises that Motta’s future is still open: „At the moment, the only thing that is certain is that Motta has an expiring contract with Bologna. Will he stay at Bologna? I can’t say, because I’m not negotiating with anyone.“
While Alonso has turned down FC Bayern and remains loyal to Leverkusen, Motta is now in talks himself via his advisor. However, Roberto De Zerbi is currently the favourite to succeed Tuchel. Ex-Bayern coach and current Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann is also regarded as a top candidate for the coaching job at the Munich club.
Eberl wants to „make the best decision“
The Bayern bosses, led by sporting director Max Eberl, are under pressure to make a decision soon. „We start in April, it would be nice if we could do it in April,“ Eberl recently said on Sky. He made it clear that the search for a new coach must be comprehensive and well-considered: „We want to make the best decision.“
An unusual but potentially very suitable solution could be found in Motta. The former professional player has made a name for himself in recent years as an innovative coach who promotes young talent and stands for attractive football.
