Goal party! Bayern knock Mainz out of the stadium

FC Bayern wins its home match against Mainz 05 more than clearly. Harry Kane scores a treble. Serge Gnabry, who had been injured for a long time, also scores.

FC Bayern ran out clear 8:1 winners against FSV Mainz 05 on matchday 25 of the Bundesliga.

Harry Kane scored three times for Bayern. Leon Goretzka, Thomas Müller, Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry also got on the scoresheet twice.

Kane gave Bayern the lead. In the 13th minute, Manuel Neuer made a long throw on the right to Thomas Müller, who played a diagonal ball to Jamal Musiala. The youngster’s reception was a little off the mark, causing Musiala to drift towards the five-metre line. Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner came out, but Musiala was able to cross the ball into the centre. Kane was waiting there and was able to slot home with ease.

Goretzka scores for Bayern

Leon Goretzka made it 2:0 for the hosts in the 19th minute. Joshua Kimmich took a free-kick quickly and delivered it high to Kane, who headed against the post. However, Leon Goretzka was in the right place and was able to dust the ball into the far corner.

A penalty was awarded in the 28th minute. After a pass from Leroy Sané, Kane took a shot in the penalty area and Mainz’s Sepp van den Berg blocked it. Referee Patrick Ittrich awarded a penalty – but the VAR reversed the decision. Van den Berg blocked the ball with his back and not with his hand.

Mainz were able to reduce the deficit in the 31st minute: Nadiem Amiri smashed a free-kick into the top left-hand corner from around 25 metres. Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer stretched, but was unable to catch the shot.

Shortly before the half-time whistle, Kane again increased the lead to 3:1 for the Munich side after a fine assist from Goretzka from the left half of the pitch.

Four goals in the second half

Mainz were completely taken apart in the second half.

Müller pushed a cross-field pass over the line from close range in the 47th minute. In the 61st minute, Musiala scored with a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner.

Serge Gnabry, who had come on as a substitute shortly beforehand, made his grand entrance in the 66th minute: he had been injured for a long time, but now he scored in front of the South Curve. After a precise cross from Goretzka, the German international scored with his heel.

Kane completed his treble in the 70th minute. The English superstar headed in from close range – his 30th Bundesliga goal on matchday 25.

Goretzka added the final goal in stoppage time with a header from Kimmich’s cross.

With the win against Mainz, FC Bayern reduced the gap to league leaders Bayer Leverkusen to seven points, at least for one night. Coach Xabi Alonso’s Werkself do not face VfL Wolfsburg until Sunday (7.30pm).
