Michael Olise has developed into a world-class player at FC Bayern. However, Vincent Kompany believes the Frenchman himself has played the most crucial role in this development.
Michael Olise has long been one of FC Bayern’s most influential players. The Frenchman has continued to develop since his transfer from Crystal Palace and is now one of the most important offensive players on Vincent Kompany’s team.
The Bayern coach, however, does not want to take too much credit for this development. When asked about his possible role in Olise’s rise, Kompany made it clear on Sky that he sees the decisive factors primarily in the player himself.
“I believe a talented player like Michael Olise will always succeed; he would always be one of the best players. It’s not just his talent, but also his mentality and his eye for detail. (…) The way he always seems to spot things that others might not see—even in training. And that’s why this young man has already become a special player on the world stage,” said the coach.
When asked whether Olise has indeed become a world-class player, Kompany answered unequivocally. In response to the question, he said: “Yes, of course. Without a doubt.”
Kompany: Olise has it “in him”
For Kompany, the most crucial thing is that Olise maintains his hunger. The Bayern coach sees this as one of the coaching staff’s most important tasks: “Partly because this is now confirmation of what he’s already achieved. He’s made great strides in recent years. But the most important thing for a coach in a situation like this with players like that—and I’m not just saying this from my experience as a coach, but also from my experience as a teammate of such players—is that the hunger stays, even when the guys find themselves in an environment where that praise is no longer there.”

var d=e.data||{};
if(d.type===’FOOTY_WIDGET_HEIGHT’&&typeof d.height===’number‘){iframe.style.height=d.height+’px‘;}
});
})();
The Belgian continued: “Here, we offer praise for what you accomplish and how hard you work in practice, as well as for your leadership and performance in a game. And if that’s no longer there during a game, then we immediately have this discussion about how to take the next steps. That’s the role we play, but it’s not about turning a player into a world-class player—that’s impossible; he has to find that within himself.“
In this way, Kompany describes his role more as a mentor than as the architect of Olise’s development. Just recently, the Bayern coach had highlighted Olise’s “total package” and, in addition to his soccering ability, explicitly praised his character and mentality.
Given this development, it’s hardly surprising that Munich wants to keep its offensive star for the long term. Olise is under contract through 2029 and, according to Bayern, has no buyout clause. At the same time, the club has been considering a possible early contract extension for months.
