It had been clear for some time that Germany would bid to host the Olympic Games. As of Saturday, it is clear that Munich will be Germany’s candidate city.
The city of Munich has proven time and again in the past that it is capable of hosting major events. The infrastructure is in place, and there are numerous sports facilities in Munich and the immediate surrounding area.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will make its final decision on awarding the Games in 2029. Specifically, the decision concerns the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Games.
The bid is receiving support not only from politicians. FC Bayern, one of Munich’s flagship institutions, is also enthusiastically on board.
Hainer on Bayern and the Olympics: “We’re staying on the ball”
Herbert Hainer, president of the record-holding champion club, was part of the delegation at the pivotal meeting in Baden-Baden, for example. Bayern is supporting the bid “with great commitment,” as announced in a recent press release.
“This is a historic day for Munich, a city of sports—but today’s decision was just the kickoff. Now the decisive second half begins, and FC Bayern will continue to stand by Munich with full conviction, leveraging its international appeal,” Hainer explained. The record-holding champion will therefore try to do its part to ensure that the final decision is a positive one. Exactly what course the FCB will set remains to be seen.
“Together with the city and the German Olympic Sports Confederation, we want to inspire people’s enthusiasm for sports and the connections it fosters, and to project a cosmopolitan image of Germany to the world. There’s still a long way to go before the bid is awarded, but we’ll stay on the ball: for Munich, for Bavaria, for all of Germany—and for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which bring people together worldwide,” Hainer continued.
Recently, Bayern has already taken a few initiatives. For example, the Allianz Arena was recently illuminated in the colors of the Olympic rings, through which the record-holding champion expressed its support.
