At FC Bayern, the signs continue to point clearly toward a contract extension for Max Eberl. It is now also known how long the sporting director’s new contract is set to run.
Max Eberl’s future at FC Bayern is taking on increasingly concrete form. It’s already widely understood that the German record champions intend to continue their partnership with their sporting director beyond the current contract’s expiration in the summer of 2027. Now, a new detail regarding these plans has emerged.
According to information from Sky, Eberl is set to receive a new contract through 2029. This would mean the Munich club would extend the 52-year-old’s contract by two additional years, sending a clear signal of confidence in their sporting director.
However, final approval has not yet been granted. According to the report, the planned contract extension is set to be approved at the next meeting of the supervisory board on August 25. Afterward, concrete discussions and negotiations with Eberl will need to take place.
Interestingly, FC Bayern’s decision is reportedly independent of how successful the pending player sales turn out to be in the coming weeks. The Munich club continues to work on offloading several players to generate additional transfer revenue. Eberl’s future does not appear to be tied to this.
Eberl is expected to remain with FC Bayern through 2029
Even during the past season, there had been repeated discussions about his work and his future. In the meantime, the sporting director has received public backing from the most important decision-makers.
Uli Hoeneß has recently taken a particularly clear stance. After the honorary president had estimated the likelihood of an Eberl contract extension at “60 to 40” at the end of May, he responded to the same question at the end of July with: “One hundred percent at the moment.”
President Herbert Hainer also recently praised the work of the sports management publicly. Eberl himself reacted calmly to the newfound appreciation and made it clear that he did not want to let it influence him. “How does the saying go? Don’t believe the hype, don’t believe the drama,” he explained during the trip to Asia.
At the same time, the sporting director had already signaled his general willingness to discuss continuing the partnership. “I’m here to fulfill my duties until 2027. If they want to continue, then I’m ready to talk,” Eberl said.
It is precisely these talks that are expected to begin following the supervisory board meeting. An immediate signing is therefore not yet guaranteed. Most recently, Sky had already pointed out that both sides must first agree on the specific terms of the contract.

Eberl’s track record in sports is now viewed much more positively internally. With Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown, two key new signings were secured early on. At the same time, the Munich club has already sold several players and generated transfer revenue. The collaboration between Eberl, sporting director Christoph Freund, and head coach Vincent Kompany is also considered close.
In addition, Eberl has intensified his communication with Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. As a result, coordination within the leadership team appears to be functioning better than it did in earlier phases of his tenure.
Should the supervisory board give the green light on August 25 as planned and an agreement subsequently be reached with Eberl, a key question regarding FC Bayern’s future would be resolved early on.
