Vincent Kompany continues to rely on the club’s own youth players during FC Bayern’s preseason preparations. At the public training session at Tegernsee, a 16-year-old striker prospect in particular caught the head coach’s eye.
At FC Bayern’s public training session in Rottach-Egern, one young player in particular caught everyone’s eye: Bastian Assomo impressed during the session with the pros—and earned the full attention of head coach Vincent Kompany.
With numerous national team players still absent following the Club World Cup, a total of 14 young talents were given the opportunity to train alongside the six pros: Sven Ulreich, Tom Bischof, Joao Palhinha, Sacha Boey, Arijon Ibrahimovic, and Armindo Sieb. Assomo made the most of this opportunity in impressive fashion.
During a small-sided game, the forward was, according to BILD, repeatedly sought out as a passing option. Particularly notable: Kompany played alongside him and took on the task of marking the 16-year-old himself. The Belgian repeatedly sought physical confrontations, pushed the striker away, and regularly gave him advice on his positioning between plays.
Kompany is specifically mentoring Assomo
It was already evident during the friendly against SV Wehen Wiesbaden (1–2) that Kompany places great importance on the young forward’s development. During the first half, he took Assomo aside several times to give him personal instructions.
The German-Cameroonian transferred from Hertha BSC to FC Bayern in the summer of 2025 and was already considered one of the most promising striker prospects of his age group at that time. Standing 1.90 meters tall, he has the ideal physical attributes for the role of center forward, while also impressing with his agility and solid technique. His finishing, in particular, is considered a major strength: In twelve appearances for the U17 team and the reserve squad, Assomo scored twelve goals.
Although a syndesmotic ligament tear set the forward back by several months in late November 2025, he made an impressive return and scored a hat trick in just 16 minutes during his comeback match against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
For the upcoming season, Assomo is primarily slated to play for the reserve team under new coach Dante. Nevertheless, the 16-year-old has been allowed to train regularly with the first team in recent months and was named to the matchday squad for the first time at the end of April for the Bundesliga game against Mainz, though he did not see any playing time.
The fact that Assomo is once again part of the first-team preseason training and is receiving intensive personal guidance from Kompany underscores the high regard in which FC Bayern holds its promising young striker.
