A major personnel decision is in the offing at FC Bayern. Konrad Laimer has now spoken publicly about the future of his defensive colleague Dayot Upamecano and has chosen clear words
In an interview with Sky, the Austrian spoke about a possible contract extension for the French centre-back. Laimer made no secret of how much he values the 27-year-old both as a player and as a person: „A contract extension would definitely be important. He’s a great person and a great footballer. He has so much potential and he gives us so much, on and off the pitch. I’ve played with him for so long and would love to play with him for even longer.“
The two also have a long sporting history together, which began in Salzburg and led via Leipzig to Munich. Laimer joked when asked whether it is more unpleasant to play against himself or against Upamecano: „That’s for others to decide, but it is unpleasant to play against Dayot. I’ve known him for so long, I’ve trained with him for so long in Salzburg, Leipzig and now at Bayern. And if you run against him or he steps on your foot, it can be unpleasant.“
Mega contract for Upamecano about to be signed

Behind the scenes, talks with Upamecano are entering the home straight. According to information from L’Équipe, the agreement has now been reached. The decisive hurdle – an exit clause – has therefore been cleared. The new contract is set to run until at least 2030, with an option to extend until 2031. The contractual exit clause of €65 million will probably not come into effect until the summer of 2027
FC Bayern is also making a clear financial statement. Upamecano is set to receive an annual salary of around €20 million and a hand bonus of the same amount. The total package thus exceeds the €100 million mark – a strong commitment to the Frenchman’s role in Vincent Kompany’s team
The coach was a decisive factor in Upamecano’s decision. Under Kompany, he is regarded as an undisputed regular and a central part of the defence. The final contract is expected to be signed in the coming days
While everything is moving towards an extension for Upamecano, a new contract is also on the cards for Konrad Laimer. The midfielder’s current contract runs until 2027, but according to club sources, this is set to be extended early until 2028 or even 2029. Talks are in the final stages – a deal seems to be just a formality.
