FC Bayern could soon be making some important changes to their squad. Rumors are circulating about Serge Gnabry and Konrad Laimer extending their contracts – and Lothar Matthäus has a clear stance on the matter
The former world-class player and record DFB international would expressly welcome a double deal. „Extending the contracts of both players is the right decision for me,“ Matthäus wrote in his column on Sky. In his view, there are both sporting and structural reasons for this move
For Matthäus, Laimer in particular is emblematic of what coach Vincent Kompany currently demands of his players. The Austrian is an absolute must and is playing „a strong first half of the season“. Above all, Matthäus emphasizes his willingness to uncompromisingly put himself at the service of the team. Laimer knows „above all how to convince with his versatility“ and is therefore an important factor in the Bayern structure
Matthäus pleads for Bayern to extend Gnabry’s contract
Matthäus is also sympathetic to the club management’s thoughts on Gnabry. Despite the strong competition in attack, he believes an extension makes sense. Alongside young players such as Lennart Karl or Michael Olise, Gnabry is „someone Munich can rely on“. It’s not just about goals or assists, but also about his impact within the team. „It’s not just his performance on the pitch that’s crucial, but also how he holds the team together and leads it,“ said Matthäus
In sporting terms, Gnabry has certainly impressed this season, with five goals and eight assists in all competitions underlining his importance, even if his role could change in the future. Matthäus does not rule out the possibility of the attacking player coming off the bench more often in the future, but believes he is still clearly part of the plan. However, he will „still play an important role at FC Bayern“
According to Sky, Gnabry is set to receive a new contract until 2028, while Laimer, whose current deal runs until 2027, could even extend his contract until 2029. If Bayern manage to pull off this double signing, it would close two potential holes in the squad at an early stage – just as Lothar Matthäus would have hoped.
