Will FC Bayern appoint a prominent Frenchman to the head coach’s job next season? TV pundit Mario Basler believes in this theory.
„The only person who was always on the list of candidates who has a chance for me is Zidane,“ said Mario Basler, quoted in his podcast „Basler ballert“.
According to the 55-year-old, the Frenchman has the best chance of taking over the job that Thomas Tuchel has until the end of June. Basler described the separation from Tuchel as premature. They should have waited for the team’s performance in the Champions League before parting ways. „I think Bayern made a snap decision – just like they did with Nagelsmann back then,“ Basler said.
Alonso staying? Basler sees problems for Eberl
„If he now declares at some point that he will stay at Leverkusen for another year, then I wouldn’t want to be in Max Eberl’s shoes,“ Basler continued with regard to the coaching debate. By „he“, of course, he meant Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, who does not want to make a decision about his future until late in the season. In addition to rumours of a stint at Liverpool or Madrid, the possibility of him remaining at Leverkusen cannot be ruled out, possibly also depending on the team’s performance in the current season.
„Every coach who comes in then knows that he was only the second choice from the outset,“ Basler continued to speculate.
While he sees Zidane as the favourite, he rules out another possible candidate and returnee for the job. „I don’t think Hansi Flick will be brought back. I still believe a little bit in Zidane,“ confirmed the TV pundit, who was under contract with FC Bayern from 1996 to 1999 and won the German championship three times with the club as well as reaching the final of the Champions League in 1999.
