After his hospital stay, Vincent Kompany is back home. Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl, revealed new details about the coach’s illness following the cup victory against Magdeburg. When asked about a possible comeback, however, the 53-year-old responded in no uncertain terms.
FC Bayern can breathe a cautious sigh of relief regarding Vincent Kompany. The 40-year-old Belgian was discharged from the hospital after several days. Following the decisive 6-1 victory in the DFB Cup against 1. FC Magdeburg, sporting director Max Eberl confirmed the good news and at the same time provided insights into the Bayern coach’s current state of health.
“So the diagnosis is meningeal irritation—there’s a difference,” Eberl clarified, explicitly distinguishing the condition from meningitis.
The extensive examinations have now been completed. For those in charge, the most important thing is that the cause of the symptoms is now known and Kompany can be treated accordingly.
“The treatment calls for rest. That will definitely be the case over the next few days,” explained the Bayern boss. He described the coach’s discharge from the hospital as “the best news of the entire day.”
Eberl Criticizes Questions About Kompany’s Return
Eberl reacted much more emotionally when asked about a possible timeline for Kompany’s return to the sidelines. The fact that a comeback was already being discussed immediately after his discharge from the hospital left the sporting director baffled.
“But that’s exactly part of the absurdity we’re dealing with. He’s just been discharged from the hospital—the incident happened five days ago—and already people are asking when he’ll be back,” Eberl criticized.
The 53-year-old made it unmistakably clear that the coach’s health is the top priority. “He’ll get the rest and the time he needs to recover,” Eberl emphasized.
The Bayern boss could not give a specific date for his return. Only when the doctors treating him give the green light will Kompany resume his work at Säbener Straße.
Will Kompany have to scale back his workload in the future?
At the same time, Eberl expressed optimism that the Belgian will be able to fully resume his daily coaching duties once he has recovered.
“But from what I’ve heard, he’ll make a full recovery,” explained the sporting director. He stressed, however, that he himself is not a medical expert and relies on the doctors’ assessments.
Eberl is convinced that Kompany will learn from this exceptional health situation. The ambitious Bayern coach may need to pay a little more attention to his workload in the future.
“And maybe one less cup of coffee, maybe one more afternoon off,” Eberl said with a wink.
The sporting director described Kompany as an intelligent person and a consummate professional who will handle the situation responsibly.
One thing is certain: FC Bayern does not want to take any risks. Even though Kompany is likely to return to the training field as soon as possible, the Belgian will not resume his duties until he has fully recovered and the doctors give their approval.
