After a strong start to the season, FC Bayern has recently hit a bit of a rough patch. In both the 2-2 draw against FC Augsburg and the 3-3 tie in the Champions League against Viking Stavanger, the Munich team showed some uncharacteristic weaknesses. The defense, in particular, looked vulnerable. Lothar Matthäus, Germany’s all-time leading international, sees a familiar pattern in this and is convinced that the German record champions will bounce back soon.
The 65-year-old analyzed the current situation of Vincent Kompany’s team on RTL/Sky and had some critical words to say.
“They aren’t as solid as they were last year. There’s a bit of a lack of concentration on defense. They’re letting a lot of scoring chances slip away. They handled that better last year,” Matthäus explained.
Above all, the lack of consistency in front of both goals is currently a cause for concern for the former Bayern captain.
Matthäus Recognizes a Familiar Bayern Problem After the World Cup
For Matthäus, however, the current dip in performance doesn’t come as a complete surprise.
The former World Player of the Year sees a connection to last summer’s World Cup and points to similar patterns in the past. “But if you look back, Bayern has always had trouble getting back into the season the way you might expect after a World Cup.”
The numerous national team players had to readjust to their club routines after the tournament. The heavy workload and the comparatively short preseason could be factors here.
For Matthäus, the current slump is therefore no reason to fundamentally question the Munich team.
His prediction is clear: “They’ll bounce back.”
Against Leipzig and Arsenal: Bayern Facing the Weeks of Truth

The coming weeks could prove to be a decisive test for FC Bayern.
As early as Saturday evening, Vincent Kompany’s team will host RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena. Next up is a Champions League showdown with Arsenal.
Matches against Borussia Dortmund and Atlético Madrid are also on the schedule for the coming weeks.
According to Matthäus, it is precisely these top-tier matches that could help the Munich team regain their usual strength.
The former Bayern pro is convinced that the team will once again show a different level of performance, especially against top-tier opponents. “That’s when we’ll see the true face of FC Bayern again,” Matthäus emphasized.
For Kompany and his players, the priority now is to eliminate defensive lapses and capitalize more consistently on their numerous scoring opportunities.
If they succeed, their recent slump could quickly be forgotten. Matthäus, in any case, firmly believes that Bayern will be back in top form in time for the crucial matches.
