Lennart Karl is one of the biggest breakthroughs at FC Bayern in recent months. The 18-year-old has made the leap from a promising youth player to a professional at an impressive pace. However, his rise in the sport has also significantly increased the attention surrounding him.
It’s not just Karl’s soccer skills that are generating buzz. The attacking player exudes extreme confidence on the field, looks to dribble, and doesn’t shy away from the occasional trick. Some observers sometimes perceive this demeanor as arrogant or over the top.
His provocative celebration against SV Elversberg also sparked controversy recently. Karl subsequently apologized to the opposing fans for the incident.
However, his agent, Michael Ballack, sees no reason to view his protégé’s self-assured demeanor critically.
Ballack: “Lennart has personality.”
On the Kerners11 podcast, the former Bayern pro made it clear that he actually considers Karl’s character to be a decisive factor in his rise to this point.
“Lennart has personality, and that’s very important. In an environment like FC Bayern, you won’t make it at 17 if you don’t have a strong personality. That’s what young players need today,” Ballack explained.
The former national team captain knows from his own experience just how intense the pressure can be at a club like FC Bayern. In his view, young professionals in particular therefore need not only exceptional soccer skills but also the self-confidence necessary to assert themselves in this environment.
Ballack calls for more individuality
Accordingly, Ballack isn’t a fan of overly restricting young players’ individuality.
“They need individuality. Of course they need talent, but they also need qualities that may have been somewhat lost these days in education, in schools, and even in youth academies.”
In Karl’s case, his development has been particularly rapid lately. Just over a year ago, the attacking player was still fighting to prove himself during preseason training with the first team. He subsequently established himself in Bayern’s squad and eventually even made the leap to the German national team.
The fact that Karl’s self-assured demeanor occasionally rubs people the wrong way doesn’t seem to worry Ballack. Rather, he sees precisely this strong personality as a quality the 18-year-old needs to establish himself permanently at FC Bayern.
