FC Bayern will have its next chance at a major triumph in its home stadium in 2028. After the Champions League final was held in Munich in 2012 and 2025, UEFA has also selected the Allianz Arena to host the final of the 2027–28 season. For the record-breaking champions, this decision could have an impact much sooner.
According to information from BILD, the award “will certainly also have an impact on transfer policy.” The goal is clear: If Europe’s most important club match takes place in Munich again, FC Bayern wants not only to host it but also to compete for the trophy itself.
From Bayern’s perspective, memories of previous finals at the Allianz Arena are painful. In 2012, the record champions lost the legendary “Finale Dahoam” to Chelsea FC in a penalty shootout. In 2025, Bayern was eliminated by Inter Milan in the quarterfinals, thus missing out on the chance for another home final.
Olise and Kane will become even more important
Player planning for the coming years is therefore likely to take on special significance. Among others, the focus is on Michael Olise. The Frenchman’s contract runs through 2029. Letting one of their most important players go a year before his contract expires—with the Champions League final in Munich just a few months later—is unlikely to fit Bayern’s sporting plans.
In any case, the record champions want to work with Olise for the long term. A contract extension would not only provide planning certainty but also send an important signal with an eye toward 2028.
The situation with Harry Kane is similarly intriguing. The 33-year-old’s contract expires in 2027, and talks about an extension are already underway. The Englishman has made it clear on several occasions just how strongly he desires the Champions League title.
According to the report, Bayern is planning for an extension through 2029, while Kane can envision a longer term extending through 2030. One thing is clear: If the striker does indeed stay beyond 2027, the 2028 home final would be an additional sporting goal.
Will Wirtz be back in the picture?
And then there’s Florian Wirtz. The German national team player was already a major transfer target for Munich before his move to Liverpool FC. Currently, due to his difficult sporting situation in England, his name is once again being increasingly linked with Bayern.
Whether this will actually lead to a new transfer push remains to be seen. A Wirtz deal would, in any case, require an enormous investment. Liverpool paid around 125 million euros for the playmaker in 2025 and is unlikely to let him go on the cheap.
The awarding of the final could nevertheless influence Bayern’s plans for the summer of 2027. In any case, BILD expects it to have an impact on the club’s transfer policy.
However, there is no question of a financial “all-in” move at this point. Given their ambitious goal, it seems reasonable that Bayern would want to assemble a particularly strong squad ahead of the 2027–28 season. From Munich’s perspective, the third “Finale Dahoam” should finally have a different outcome.
