Michael Olise appears to be increasingly annoyed by his opponents’ style of play and the referees’ handling of it. The FC Bayern star forward is said to have complained to the referees several times already in the first few weeks of the new season and demanded more protection.
According to the French sports newspaper L’Équipe, Olise believes that his opponents have at times been too aggressive against him in the six games played so far this season and that the referees are not intervening consistently enough.
According to the report, his frustration came to a head during Bayern’s 0-0 draw at Schalke. After Olise tried to break through against three opponents and subsequently went down, the referee did not blow the whistle.
The Frenchman then sought a direct confrontation with referee Schröder. The situation reportedly became so heated that Harry Kane intervened and pulled his teammate away from the referee to prevent a possible yellow card.
Olise warns referee: “That’s not okay”
According to L’Équipe, Olise made his frustration clear in English. The 24-year-old demanded that the referee take more consistent action against the defenders.
“You have to be more consistent, otherwise I’ll end up getting torn to shreds. You can’t just stand there and do nothing about how your defenders are behaving. You can’t let everything slide—that’s not acceptable.”
The scene reveals a side of Olise that we’ve rarely seen at Bayern Munich so far. Off the field, the Frenchman is considered rather reserved and tends to make headlines primarily for his on-field performances.
On the field, however, the increasing physicality directed at him seems to be taking its toll. Thanks to his tight ball control and dribbling ability, Olise is one of the Bayern players who repeatedly seeks out direct duels with multiple opponents.
Kane apparently prevents a yellow card
The fact that Kane, of all people, had to intervene underscores just how upset Olise is said to have been during the incident at Schalke. The Bayern captain, who also plays for the English national team, apparently recognized the risk of a caution and pulled his teammate away from the referee.
According to L’Équipe, the Frenchman’s frustration isn’t just a reaction to this one incident. Olise is said to have already spoken to the referees on several occasions because he wants more protection during aggressive challenges.
For the Bayern star, the main issue is apparently a more consistent standard of officiating. That’s exactly what he made clear with his blunt message to Schröder.
Olise doesn’t want his opponents’ tougher play to throw him off his game. At the same time, he expects the referees to intervene sooner. At Schalke, he had apparently reached his breaking point—and Kane had to step in to ensure the heated discussion didn’t lead to further consequences.
