FC Bayern has reason to celebrate a special honor for one of its greatest young talents. Cassiano Kiala was awarded the silver Fritz Walter Medal in the 2009 age group, officially placing him among the outstanding German players of his generation.
The gold medal went to Kennet Eichhorn. For Kiala, however, the silver is further confirmation of his rapid development, which has already taken him all the way to the first team of Germany’s record-holding champions.
The center back transferred from Hertha BSC to the Bayern Campus in the summer of 2024. There, he quickly made a name for himself and got his first taste of the Bundesliga at just 16 years old.
During the 4-0 away win against 1. FC Heidenheim in December 2025, Vincent Kompany sent the youngster onto the field shortly before the end of the match. Kiala thus became the second-youngest Bundesliga debutant in the history of Bayern’s professional team.
Bayern has long-term plans for Kiala
Kiala has also gained plenty of experience at the youth level. Last season, he played in five matches in the U19 DFB Youth League, scoring one goal. He also made five appearances in the UEFA Youth League and earned his first playing time with the reserve team in the Bavarian Regional League.
The 1.86-meter-tall defender is also highly regarded by the DFB. Kiala has made six appearances for the German U17 team so far and has even captained the youth squad on the field.
However, his development suffered a setback last spring. During the Algarve Cup in February, Kiala sustained an ankle injury that required surgery and sidelined him for several months.
That did nothing to shake the confidence of Bayern’s management. As recently as August, the Munich club extended the contract with their defensive talent on a long-term basis through 2031.
Freund: “We have high hopes for Cassiano.”
Sports Director Christoph Freund made it clear during the contract extension just how highly Kiala is regarded by the record champions: “We have high hopes for Cassiano and want to gradually integrate him into our first team.”
Freund continued: “He is the second-youngest player in the history of FC Bayern’s first team, has already taken on the responsibility of captain for the German U-17 national team, and has everything it takes to build a career at FC Bayern. Last season, he was sidelined by injury—now we’re looking forward to taking the next steps with him.”
The Fritz Walter Medal marks the latest recognition of Kiala’s progress to date. At the same time, the award underscores why Bayern signed the center back to a long-term contract through 2031 at such an early stage.
Following his Bundesliga debut, his long injury layoff, and his contract extension, Kiala is now set to take the next step in his development. The Munich club’s goal is clear: the 17-year-old is expected to establish himself with the first team in the long term.
