Ahead of the top Bundesliga match between Schalke 04 and FC Bayern, violent clashes broke out between fans of both clubs. Schalke and Bayern fans clashed in a parking lot in Gelsenkirchen. The consequences were significant: According to information from BILD, approximately 500 Bayern fans were banned from the stadium.
As a result, the affected fans were not allowed to enter the stadium and missed the subsequent 0-0 draw at the Veltins-Arena. The active fan base of the record champions apparently reacted as one to the measures.
According to BILD, the Bayern ultras decided to boycott the match due to the numerous stadium bans. As a result, the record champions lacked a large portion of their usual vocal support in the visitors’ section.
Earlier, unpleasant scenes had unfolded in a parking lot.
Mass brawl between the two fan groups
Video footage of the altercation is circulating on social media. The website hooligans.cz published a clip showing large groups from both fan camps coming face-to-face. Within a very short time, this escalated into a massive physical altercation.
According to BILD, home and away fans had not been consistently separated from one another in the lead-up to the match. This allowed the two groups to come into contact with one another.
The website hooligans.cz goes even further, describing the altercation as a “planned street brawl.” According to the report, Schalke ultras were waiting for the arriving fans from Munich. However, it has not yet been conclusively determined whether and to what extent the clash was actually prearranged.
What is certain is that the police subsequently took extensive measures. Around 500 Bayern fans are said to have been ejected and were therefore no longer allowed into the Veltins-Arena.

The measures ultimately affected the atmosphere during the match as well. In protest against the eictions, Bayern ultras reportedly chose not to attend the game.
For the record champions, the evening thus went anything but according to plan, even off the field. While some fans were involved in the riots before the game or were affected by the subsequent police actions, the team on the field also dropped points.
Bayern could not manage more than a scoreless draw against a passionately defending Schalke side. As a result, Vincent Kompany’s team dropped points for the first time this Bundesliga season.
