FC Bayern enters the new season as the heavy favorite to win the German championship. If Thomas Müller has his way, the Munich team might even find itself relatively unchallenged in the title race. The longtime Bayern star currently sees no Bundesliga team capable of keeping pace with the record champions over the course of an entire season.
In an interview with WELT, Müller offered a clear prediction for the Bundesliga season. While the former FCB pro does see a few ambitious teams trailing behind Munich, he doesn’t see any real title contenders.
“I don’t see any team in Germany that can keep up with FC Bayern this season,” Müller made unmistakably clear.
Müller expects another high points total
Müller bases his assessment primarily on the consistency he believes Bayern will demonstrate throughout the entire season. “FC Bayern will likely accumulate a similar number of points as last season. I don’t think anyone else will reach a comparable point total,” explained the former Munich player.
Müller also mentioned Bayer Leverkusen. The “Werkself” had an extraordinary season in 2023/24 and snatched the championship away from Bayern at the time.
For Müller, however, that achievement was virtually impossible to replicate: “Leverkusen managed it once in the 2023–24 season with an extraordinary performance and many last-minute goals—but that was an exception.”
This raises less the question of whether Dortmund, Leipzig, Leverkusen, or Stuttgart can, in principle, have a strong season. For Müller, the decisive factor is rather whether one of these clubs can accumulate enough points over 34 matchdays to win the championship against Bayern.
“No repeat of Leverkusen” this season
The 35-year-old has the familiar names on his list as potential contenders. “Of course, there are the usual suspects like Dortmund, Leipzig, and Leverkusen,” Müller said.
In his view, VfB Stuttgart has also established itself among the ambitious Bundesliga clubs. However, the former Bayern star doesn’t believe they have what it takes to go all the way.
“I also see Stuttgart as an ambitious team, but not one capable of more than 80 points in a season,” Müller explained.
His prediction for the title race is therefore clear: “I don’t think a new Leverkusen will emerge this season.”
In doing so, Müller contradicts Dietmar Hamann—at least in part. The Sky expert had recently described Borussia Dortmund as “Bayern’s only serious competitor” and believed the BVB was capable of giving the Munich side a run for their money for much of the season.
Müller goes a step further. Should FC Bayern once again play a season as consistent as their last, he currently sees no Bundesliga team that can seriously threaten Vincent Kompany’s squad in the fight for the championship.
