Felipe Chavez has used the preseason at FC Bayern to make a name for himself. Despite his strong performances, the 19-year-old could soon be leaving Munich again—at least temporarily.
With three goals in preseason so far and several impressive performances, Felipe Chavez is among the Bayern talents who have capitalized on their opportunity under Vincent Kompany. However, that likely won’t secure him a permanent spot on the first-team roster just yet.
According to information from FCBinside, Bayern’s management hasn’t ruled out loaning out Chavez again for the upcoming season. This would allow the 19-year-old to play regularly at a high level for another club and take the next step in his development.
A permanent departure, on the other hand, is not on the table. Before a new loan deal could be finalized, Munich would first have to extend the young midfielder’s contract. Chavez’s current contract runs only through the summer of 2027.
Chavez is making the most of his opportunity during Bayern’s preseason
The German-Peruvian has certainly made a strong case for himself in recent weeks. In the 15-0 win over FC Rottach-Egern, Chavez scored two goals. The youngster also made an impression during the club’s tour of Asia, scoring the opening goal for FC Bayern in the friendly against Jeju SK.
Chavez knows the club inside and out. He has played for the record champion’s youth teams since the U15 level and made the leap to the first team for the first time last season. He made his Bundesliga debut in the 8-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg, when Kompany brought him on for the final stages of the match. Shortly thereafter, he made another brief appearance in the 1-2 loss to FC Augsburg.
Last winter, club officials ultimately decided to send him on loan to 1. FC Köln. However, Chavez did not make the breakthrough he had hoped for at the Bundesliga rival. The midfielder came off the bench seven times and logged a total of just 108 minutes of playing time. Cologne subsequently decided not to exercise the agreed-upon purchase option. As a result, Chavez returned to Munich in the summer and used the preseason to once again prove himself to Kompany.
This development is also interesting in light of Max Eberl’s recent statements. During the club’s tour of Asia, the sporting director had explained that FC Bayern generally intends to send out fewer young players on loan and instead wants to leverage the close integration between the first team and the reserve squad. However, playing time remains the decisive factor for club officials when it comes to the development of young players.
Another loan could offer Chavez the opportunity to accumulate significantly more playing time than he did most recently in Cologne.
