FC Bayern now knows its first opponent for the 2026–27 Bundesliga season. As the DFL officially announced on Wednesday, the German record champion will open the new season with a home game against VfB Stuttgart.
While the World Cup in North America is still in full swing, attention in Germany is already turning to the upcoming Bundesliga season. The German Soccer League (DFL) has now officially announced the opening match.
Reigning German champion FC Bayern will host VfB Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena on August 28, kicking off the new Bundesliga season.
Bayern will once again kick off the season in front of their home crowd
It was already clear that the defending champion would traditionally play the opening match. The only question remaining was who the opponent would be.
VfB Stuttgart presents a challenging task right off the bat for Vincent Kompany’s team. Following their strong performance last season, the Swabians are once again among the Champions League participants and rank among the most ambitious teams in the Bundesliga.

Bayern also kicked off the Bundesliga in front of their home crowd last season. Back then, the record champions celebrated a resounding 6-0 victory over RB Leipzig, laying the foundation for a dominant season.
In the end, Munich comfortably secured the German championship and finished the season 16 points ahead of the competition.
The full schedule will be released on Thursday
In recent days, the DFL had already gradually released individual matchups—including the two local derbies between Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund, as well as the opening match of the 2. Bundesliga.
With the announcement of the Bundesliga opener, the early release of the schedule is now complete. The full schedule for the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga will be officially presented on Thursday.
