Hoeneß emphasizes: Matthäus destroyed Bayern’s Woltemade transfer

FC Bayern was apparently much closer to signing Nick Woltemade than previously thought – at least from Uli Hoeneß‘ point of view. The honorary president of FC Bayern continues to see Lothar Matthäus‘ public statements as the reason for the deal falling through.

matthäus‘ statement with Woltemade: „I’ll tell you one thing, we would have bought him for 50 million. I’m pretty sure we could have done it, but then Matthäus says in the newspaper that he’s definitely worth 60 to 80,“ Hoeneß grumbled in an interview with Der Spiegel.

Matthäus‘ statements meant that VfB Stuttgart were no longer in a position to „sell him for 55, because they would have been under so much pressure that they would have been too stupid to carry out what Matthäus was trumpeting to the world as a so-called expert.“

The Bayern patron followed up and made it clear that he was less bothered by the free expression of opinion than its effect on ongoing negotiations: „He doesn’t have to use his position to constantly harm FC Bayern,“ Hoeneß ranted.

Woltemade back on Bayern’s agenda?

But, as we all know, postponed is not cancelled. After Woltemade made a strong start to the season at Newcastle, reports of dissatisfaction have recently been doing the rounds. There has also been speculation about tensions with coach Eddie Howe.

However, transfer expert Florian Plettenberg takes a more nuanced view of the situation: „His main aim is to stay. He feels comfortable and has a good relationship with Eddie Howe,“ says the Sky journalist.

At the same time, he made it clear: „If his playing time doesn’t change, a transfer in the summer cannot be ruled out.“

It is at this point that the link to FC Bayern becomes interesting again. Munich are still looking for a flexible attacking solution behind Harry Kane – preferably a player who can be deployed both in the center of attack and between the lines. Woltemade fits this profile almost perfectly.
