There is still a big question mark over Max Eberl’s future at FC Bayern. The 52-year-old’s contract expires in the summer of 2027. An extension is considered uncertain. It has now become known that a top Saudi Arabian club has made an effort to acquire the experienced Bundesliga manager
The discussions about Max Eberl’s future at FC Bayern continue unabated. Now there is apparently even concrete interest from Saudi Arabia in the Munich club’s sporting director. As the Saudi newspaper Arriyadiyah reports, Al-Ittihad is looking closely at signing the 52-year-old
The club is said to have already held initial talks with Eberl
Al-Ittihad plans Eberl as new sports director
According to the report, the Saudi Arabian top club would like to install Eberl as the new sporting director, apparently due to the planned separation from previous squad planner Ramon Planes
However, talks between Al-Ittihad and Eberl are said to have come to a standstill due to differing ideas about the club’s future sporting direction. No agreement has yet been reached
The news comes at a time when Eberl’s future at FC Bayern is still open anyway. The former Bundesliga professional has been working as head of sport in Munich since March 2024 and his contract runs until summer 2027
Despite the successful season in sporting terms, Eberl is still not uncontroversial internally, with several media reports criticizing his squad planning from last summer in particular
Criticism of transfers and negotiations

According to information from SPORT1, some insiders speak of „chaotic“ transfer planning, with Eberl being accused internally of wanting to spend too much money and not being consistent enough in negotiations with advisors and players
The financial framework in particular is currently playing a major role at Säbener Strasse, with the supervisory board continuing to call for the salary structure to be stabilized and major investments to be carefully weighed up
Decision will not be made until August
However, there does not appear to be any immediate threat to Eberl’s position at present. According to Sport BILD, his future will not be discussed in concrete terms until the next supervisory board meeting in August
Eberl himself recently made it clear that he still sees himself at FC Bayern in the long term. „I think we’ve now got some very, very good things in place. I feel very, very comfortable,“ the sporting director said on DAZN ahead of the Champions League second leg against Paris Saint-Germain. He continued: „They should evaluate my job. And if they think my job is good, then I’m also prepared to stay at Bayern for longer.“
One thing seems clear: the coming months are likely to be decisive for Eberl – both at FC Bayern and possibly internationally.
