FC Bayern Women have completed their strong season with a commanding 4-0 win over VfL Wolfsburg to secure not only the championship but also the DFB Cup – their second double in a row
FC Bayern Women made club history on Thursday evening at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne. In the final of the DFB Cup, coach José Barcala’s team beat VfL Wolfsburg 4-0 to crown the most successful season in the club’s history
After winning the German championship, the Munich team thus completed the double – for the second time in a row
In front of 46,064 spectators in the sold-out stadium, President Herbert Hainer, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, Chief Sports Officer Max Eberl and Sports Director Christoph Freund, among others, witnessed a dominant performance by the Bayern women
Stanway puts Bayern on course shortly before the break
The match began on an even keel before Munich took more and more control as the game wore on. Wolfsburg defended deep and compactly, meaning that clear goalscoring opportunities were initially in short supply
Pernille Harder had the first dangerous action after around 20 minutes when she headed a cross from Klara Bühl just wide of the goal
FC Bayern then took a deserved lead shortly before the break when Georgia Stanway confidently converted the resulting penalty in first-half stoppage time to make it 1-0 after Momoko Tanikawa was fouled in the box
Just a few minutes later, Wolfsburg’s Sarah Linder even prevented another Munich goal with a save on the line
Harder and Tanikawa decide the final
Bayern clearly remained the better team after the break and in the 59th minute, former Wolfsburg player Pernille Harder, of all people, made the difference by heading in a cross from Magdalena Eriksson to make it 2-0
As the game progressed, the Munich side created more and more space, which Bayern exploited to the full
In the 77th minute, Tanikawa increased the lead to 3:0 after a deflected pass from Bühl and finally removed the last doubts about the cup victory
The final goal was scored by substitute Arianna Caruso seven minutes before the end with a spectacular free-kick to make it 4-0
The FC Bayern women not only celebrated a clear victory in the final, but also the next big chapter in their success story
Perfect season for the Bayern women
By winning the double, the Munich women impressively confirmed their dominant position in German women’s soccer. Particularly noteworthy: Wolfsburg had repeatedly caused FC Bayern problems in the cup in recent years
This time, however, José Barcala’s team left no doubt from the outset as to who would take the title
The final Bundesliga match of the season now awaits against Hamburger SV, the newly crowned double winners, at the Volksparkstadion on Sunday.
