Chief Sports Officer Max Eberl has expressed his openness to a long-term future at FC Bayern ahead of the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain. At the same time, Honorary President Uli Hoeneß made it clear that concrete talks about a contract extension can only be held in the summer
Max Eberl has played a key role in shaping FC Bayern’s sporting direction since taking office in March 2024. The 52-year-old has now spoken publicly for the first time about his own future at the German record champions – and sent clear signals in the process
„Now I think we’ve got some very, very good things in place. I feel very, very comfortable,“ explained Eberl in an interview with DAZN ahead of the semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain
The sporting director also emphasized that the evaluation of his work is crucial for him. „People should evaluate my job. And if they think my job is good, then I am also prepared to stay at Bayern for longer,“ said Eberl
The former Gladbach and Leipzig manager is currently tied to FC Bayern until the summer of 2027, but those responsible could soon be considering an early extension
Particularly interesting: Eberl also spoke openly about the difficult initial phase following his move to Säbener Strasse. „I think everything I invested here, the passion, what I did with the people – it wasn’t quite so easy at the beginning, because of course a few character heads came together,“ explained the Bayern boss
At the same time, Eberl also sees this as one of the club’s strengths: „But I think that’s the only thing that helps a big club like Bayern Munich, that people rub shoulders, that they discuss things with each other,“ the 52-year-old continued
Hoeneß announces talks in the summer
Honorary President Uli Hoeneß has also already commented on Eberl’s future – albeit in a much more reserved manner. The 74-year-old told DAZN that a premature extension could not formally be an issue at the moment anyway
„First of all, you need to know that board contracts cannot be extended more than a year before they expire,“ Hoeneß clarified, adding that talks about a possible extension could therefore be held from July 1 at the earliest
Nevertheless, Hoeneß confirmed that the future of Eberl had already been discussed internally: „A possible contract extension with the sporting director was discussed for the first time at the last board meeting just under two weeks ago,“ the honorary president revealed
However, Hoeneß did not want to reveal any concrete tendencies just yet: „I don’t want to anticipate the talks that can be held from July onwards,“ he emphasized
Max Eberl’s future at FC Bayern therefore remains open for the time being, but one thing is clear: the 52-year-old currently plays a central role at the Munich club, both in sporting and structural terms – and seems to be able to imagine a long-term future at the record champions.
