Konrad Laimer has developed into one of the most important players in the FC Bayern squad under Vincent Kompany. Despite his sporting importance, however, the Austrian’s future has not yet been conclusively clarified. Although a contract extension is still planned, it is currently on hold
When Konrad Laimer joined FC Bayern on a free transfer from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023, he was seen as a strategic addition to the squad. A player who can cover several positions, is reliable and opens up options for the coach. Almost three years later, this picture has changed fundamentally. Under Vincent Kompany, the 28-year-old has developed into an absolute top performer and regular
Laimer has impressed with his consistency, intensity and tactical discipline, particularly on the right side of defence. This season, he is one of the most in-form right-backs in Europe and it is hard to imagine the Bayern coach’s system without him. His versatility remains a key factor here. Whether as a six, an eight or in both full-back positions – Laimer delivers consistently regardless of his role. However, the Austrian is currently missing for Munich due to injury, with a torn muscle fibre putting him out of action temporarily
Extension wanted – but not a sure-fire success

Internally, the line at FC Bayern is actually clear. As was announced at the end of last year, those responsible would like to extend Laimer’s contract early. The midfield all-rounder is still tied to the record champions until 2027, but there is support from both Kompany and the sporting management for him to stay for the long term
However, it is not quite as simple as that. As BILD recently reported, an extension is not a foregone conclusion. With an annual salary of around nine million euros, Laimer is not one of the top earners in the squad. In view of his role as a regular and key player, Bayern would therefore have to offer him a significantly higher salary. Internally, there is talk of a „regular player salary“, which would be significantly higher than his current salary
The situation is also special for Laimer himself. At the age of 28, the Austrian footballer is facing what could be the last major contract of his career. His expectations are correspondingly high. There is talk from those close to him that a new contract must mean a noticeable step forward financially. This is apparently the crux of the talks
Talks currently „on ice“
A current assessment by transfer insider Florian Plettenberg is particularly interesting in this context. As the Sky reporter reports, the extension is „currently somewhat on hold“. Plettenberg did not give any concrete reasons, but at the same time he emphasised that there are many indications that Laimer will ultimately extend his contract with FC Bayern. However, a quick agreement is not to be expected
This assessment is in line with the current situation at Säbener Straße. While Bayern have recently made headlines with the personnel issue of Dayot Upamecano in particular, several contract negotiations are running in parallel in the background. Priorities, financial framework conditions and sporting plans must be carefully coordinated
For FC Bayern, there is a lot to be said for keeping Laimer in the long term. His mentality, flexibility and consistency are an ideal match for Kompany’s style of play. At the same time, Munich want to keep an eye on their salary structure and not make any hasty decisions. Laimer, on the other hand, is aware of his importance and wants to see this reflected in his contract.
