Hasan Salihamidzic could soon be back in the Bundesliga. Almost three years after leaving FC Bayern, the former sporting director is being considered for a traditional club – one with which he has a close connection
According to Sport BILD, the 49-year-old is one of the candidates to succeed Stefan Kuntz at Hamburger SV. The name Salihamidzic has already been discussed by the supervisory board of the Red Shirts. No decision has yet been made, but the personnel issue is apparently attracting attention internally
Salihamidzic has a long history with HSV, having played for the Hamburg club’s youth team between 1992 and 1995 before joining the professional squad in 1995. He spent a total of six years in the Hanseatic city before moving to FC Bayern in 1998 – the start of an extraordinary career in Munich
Salihamidzic’s most recent role was as Head of Sport at the German record champions from 2020 to 2023. He had previously held the position of Sporting Director between 2017 and 2020. However, he was let go in May 2023 after a turbulent season in which he and board boss Oliver Kahn were responsible for Julian Nagelsmann’s change of coach, among other things. Since then, things have been quiet around the former Bayern boss
Will Salihamidzic take over at HSV?
The management position at HSV is vacant following the surprising departure of Stefan Kuntz. The Hamburg club announced the immediate separation at the beginning of January. Initially there was talk of „personal family reasons“, but the club later clarified that „allegations of serious misconduct by Stefan Kuntz“ had led to the termination of the contract

In an official statement, HSV explained: „After careful examination and the realization that the allegations are credible, the supervisory board immediately decided to seek a separation from the board member as quickly as possible. Due to the explicit request of the persons concerned, the protection of those affected had top priority in the separation, which continues to be the case.“
Against this backdrop, Hamburg are now looking for new sporting leadership. The fact that Hasan Salihamidzic also plays a role in this would mean a remarkable return to the Bundesliga – and an emotional comeback at his old place of work.
