He was part of one of the most successful teams in the club’s history. Today, Luiz Gustavo looks back on his time at FC Bayern with great gratitude. One moment in his career in particular has left a deep impression: the call from Munich
When the now veteran was targeted by then Bayern coach Louis van Gaal in 2010, it quickly became clear to him that a door had opened that could not be ignored. Looking back, the defensive midfielder spoke openly to AZ about this decisive career moment: „You don’t turn down an offer from FC Bayern.“
For him, it was a dream that became reality – even though he knew what lay ahead: „I always kept my feet on the ground and knew exactly that the step to FC Bayern was a huge leap.“
He had to assert himself in Munich’s star ensemble, something he was aware of from the outset: „At Bayern, you join a team full of big names and great careers. But on the pitch, only performance counts.“ In the dressing room, he earned respect through his commitment, not through big words. „If you want to be respected, you have to show respect yourself.“
„A real captain“ – great appreciation for Schweinsteiger
Gustavo was particularly impressed by one of his teammates: „Basti was not only a great player, but also an outstanding person with an incredible character. A real captain.“ He learned a lot from Schweinsteiger, says the 38-year-old. „I always had the desire to learn from good players, and with him I did that every day.“
Looking back, the 2013 treble season remains a highlight for Gustavo. Even though he was a late substitute in the final, he sees no fault in that: „I wasn’t disappointed. There was an incredible amount of respect among our team.“ The cohesion and trust within the team were the key to success
His departure from Munich was also without drama. There was no future together under new coach Pep Guardiola: „We didn’t speak to each other often and when we did, we only spoke briefly.“ Nevertheless, Gustavo’s gratitude prevails – for a time that shaped him and that he will never forget.
