FC Bayern is by no means the only big-name European club to start the coming season with a new coach. Since Tuesday evening, Chelsea FC has also been looking for a new coach. Following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino, there is plenty of room for speculation, with the name Thomas Tuchel also playing a role.
The separation between Thomas Tuchel and FC Bayern has been finalised since last week. However, we can still expect to see Tuchel on the touchline next season.
The 50-year-old is considered a hot candidate at Manchester United, among others, but Erik ten Hag is currently still on board at the Red Devils. At Chelsea FC, on the other hand, the chair is already vacant following the dismissal of Mauricio Pochettino. According to information from Sky, Tuchel is now „a very concrete option“ for the coaching position. The Blues and Tuchel are said to have already held casual talks and the coach is not averse to a return to London.
Tuchel return possible? Contradictory reporting raises questions
Tuchel won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 before parting ways a good year later at the request of boss Todd Boehly. After Tuchel left, things continued to go downhill for the Londoners, which is why a return would be entirely plausible.
However, the English portal talkSPORT reports, contrary to Sky’s information, that although Tuchel could imagine a comeback, the Chelsea managers are not interested. Instead, they are said to favour a younger coach and have identified 38-year-old Kieran McKenna from Ipswich Town as their preferred candidate. Sebastian Hoeneß is also rumoured to be among the other candidates, although he is likely to remain in Stuttgart after his extension. Hansi Flick has also been mentioned as an option in recent weeks.
Due to the conflicting reports, it is not yet possible to say how hot a Tuchel return to the Blues really is. Nothing seems out of the question. Even a kind of coach swap between Bayern and the Londoners would not be impossible. According to Sky, Bayern have already gathered information about Pochettino’s situation.
