With the two victories against France (2:0) and the Netherlands (2:1), the DFB team has revived the long-awaited European Championship euphoria in Germany. Not only the two victories were important, but also the way the Nagelsmann team has presented itself in recent days has made the fans happy. The national coach seems to have found his European Championship team. For Bayern stars Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry, the train to EURO 2024 could have left the station.
Even though Julian Nagelsmann has repeatedly emphasised in recent days that the door to the European Championship is still open to everyone, a clear European Championship squad has already emerged from the two test matches against France and the Netherlands.
After yesterday’s success against the Netherlands, Nagelsmann emphasised that there is no reason for any major changes to his European Championship squad: „There’s no question about it: If everyone stays healthy and continues to perform like this, we definitely won’t be swapping ten players in the summer. Not even five, maybe one or two – plus injuries.“
Goretzka and Gnabry fear for European Championship participation
These statements are likely to cause displeasure for Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry in particular. Both have not been considered by Nagelsmann recently, as the 36-year-old has numerous other options in the respective positions.
Returning midfielders Toni Kroos and Robert Andrich have established themselves in midfield. The „ten-man trio“ of Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and Ilkay Gündogan have also made a very strong impression in attack and are firmly established.
Even if Gnabry and Goretzka receive a call-up from Nagelsmann in May, they are currently far from the starting eleven: „Anyone who wasn’t there now has to go full throttle – and be better than those who are there. That’s clear,“ emphasised the national coach.
Sane has been confirmed for the squad: „We won’t miss out if he’s healthy“
Leroy Sane, on the other hand, has much less to worry about. The 28-year-old is suspended but still plays a major role in Nagelsmann’s plans: „He’s exceptionally good. He knows what it means to play a home European Championship. He has to integrate himself into this functioning group. I’m convinced that Leroy will put his qualities at the service of the team one hundred per cent. And there’s no way we’ll do without him when he’s healthy
