Max Eberl is the new strong man at Säbener Straße. The 50-year-old has been the new sporting director since 1 March and, together with sporting director Christoph Freund, has the major task of making FC Bayern fit for the future. Eberl has now revealed that he tried to lure a Bayern icon to the Lower Rhine during his time at Gladbach.

The daily tasks of a sports director include squad planning, scouting and signing promising talent. Max Eberl has already impressively demonstrated that he has a very well-trained eye for this as a long-standing sports director and later also as managing director at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Eberl has now revealed that he would also have liked to bring one or two Bayern players to Gladbach.

Eberl courted Bayern icon Thomas Müller

As Max Eberl now reported in the BILD podcast „Bayern Insider“ by chief reporter Christian Falk, the new FC Bayern sports director wanted to sign a well-known Bayern player during his early days on the Lower Rhine. Namely none other than the Munich veteran Thomas Müller!

„I actually spoke to Hermann Gerland on the phone about Thomas Müller,“ Eberl revealed in an interview with Falk. „At the beginning of his career, before he took off, because we tried to define and recognise the talents very, very much in this threshold to professional football,“ the 50-year-old continued.

Even though Max Eberl and Borussia Mönchengladbach tried very hard for Thomas Müller at the time, Müller ultimately „made the right decision – without me saying that Gladbach would have been wrong,“ Eberl continued. In conclusion, Eberl now looks back on this anecdote with humour and joked: „Maybe he would have been even better – no, joking. But that was actually a player I was involved with.“
