While the search for a successor to Tuchel is in full swing, FC Bayern is increasingly returning to its former strength. Have the Munich managers given up on Tuchel too early?
Since it was announced that Thomas Tuchel and FC Bayern will go their separate ways at the end of the season, things have been going well again at the German record champions. Their progress in the Champions League was followed by an 8:1 victory over FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday.
In the meantime, voices have emerged criticising the announced departure of Tuchel. Almost three weeks ago, both sides had agreed on an early separation in the summer.
Mario Basler criticises Bayern management
For former Bayern player Mario Basler, the Bayern bosses have acted prematurely in the Tuchel case. „I don’t understand Bayern in this personnel matter. I would have at least waited for the second leg against Lazio and then perhaps made a decision. They did that three matchdays ago,“ criticised the 55-year-old in an interview with ran.
Basler drew parallels with the dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann last year. The 36-year-old was relieved of his duties at the time, even though Bayern had a chance of winning the title in all three competitions. The change of coach did not really pay off in the end – under Tuchel, the team just about managed to win their eleventh championship title in a row, but there was largely no further development in terms of play.
„FC Bayern made the same kind of quick-fire decisions as they did with Julian Nagelsmann back then. It was also very incomprehensible to me that they changed coaches,“ said Basler. According to Basler, the problems at Säbener Straße lie deeper. „I do believe that FC Bayern has lost a bit of its face in the last two or three years,“ said the 1996 European champion.
