FC Bayern were on the verge of signing Kieran Trippier in the winter. The 33-year-old had already given the Munich club a commitment. However, the deal did not materialise as Newcastle and Bayern did not agree on the transfer fee. Trippier has now commented on the cancelled deal for the first time.

The German record champions were looking for a new right-back in January. Kieran Trippier from Newcastle United was long considered Thomas Tuchel’s favourite player. According to rumours, Munich were prepared to pay just under 20 million euros for the Kane mate, but Newcastle demanded more. The transfer ultimately fell through.

Trippier spoke to The Sun about Bayern’s interest as follows: „I was on holiday in New York and was woken up at 5am when I found out Bayern Munich wanted to sign me.“

„I never thought …““

It wasn’t just FCB fans who were surprised when Trippier’s name started circulating at Säbener Straße, the defender himself couldn’t really believe it either: „I thought: ‚This is a bit unexpected I never thought Bayern would sign me at the age of 33, so it was more of a shock for me than for others.“

Interestingly, Harry Kane said he got in touch with him after the first rumours: „He asked me if it was true, told me it was warmer there than at Newcastle and joked around a bit.“

Even if a move to FC Bayern would have appealed to Trippier, he does not regret the cancelled transfer: „I never tried to force a move out of the club. I remained loyal to Newcastle. It just wasn’t right for me.“

Following Newcastle’s cancellation, Bayern signed Sacha Boey from Galatasaray Istanbul for just under 30 million euros.
