Now that Thomas Tuchel’s departure in the summer has been finalised, Bayern bosses are working hard to find a successor. Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso is considered the absolute favourite solution. But does the coach also want to move to his former club in the summer?
Two of Xabi Alonso’s former clubs need a new manager in the summer. Bayern are not the only club to part ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season; Liverpool FC are also parting ways with Jürgen Klopp after years of working together. Rumours have recently been doing the rounds that Alonso would favour a move to the German record champions.
Sports journalist David Ornstein from The Athletic has now put these rumours in context: „Bayern are betting everything on Alonso, but I’m not aware of any concrete decisions from him,“ he explained. „He may be leaning in one direction, but that doesn’t mean it can’t change. That’s why Bayern, Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen will consider their options,“ said the usually very well-informed Ornstein.
Alonso poker: More clubs could enter the race
The future of the embattled coach is therefore far from being a done deal. Even though the 42-year-old may have tendencies, it is still possible that he will remain with the Werkself. However, other European clubs could also still enter the race: „Other teams across Europe will also be making changes in management and sporting director this summer, so there are moving aspects and implications everywhere,“ emphasised Ornstein.
Bayern will therefore also have to weigh up other alternatives if they ultimately come away empty-handed with Alonso. A signing of the successful coach is still far from certain.
