Bayern Munich travels to face Holstein Kiel for the first time in 16 years as they look to get back on track after their 3-2 loss to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Despite Kiel currently sitting in the 2. Bundesliga, they cannot be taken lightly with the North Germans sitting third in the league after a 1-1 draw with FC St.Pauli last time out. It will be the first time since 2005 that the two sides meet, and Bayern will need a win to get their groove back after being out of sorts against Gladbach.

Team news

Bayern Munich

Both Kingsley Coman and Choupo-Moting have already been ruled out with muscular discomfort and back pain respectively. Young Tanguy Nianzou is also out. Winger Serge Gnabry was all but ruled a starter by Hansi Flick as he trained with the first team as the league leaders have nearly a fully fit squad to choose from.

Holstein Kiel

The second division side will be without Noah Awuku thanks to an injury to his Achilles tendon otherwise the third-placed side will be like Bayern and have a relatively strong squad to choose from.

Team selection

It remains to be seen as to whether or not Hansi Flick decides to rotate his squad with perhaps giving a chance to Zirkzee as his ban in the Bundesliga does not carry over to the DFK-Pokal. In defence, Jerome Boateng and Lucas Hernandez could be given starts in the heart of the backline and it is unclear if Corentin Toliss and Marc Roca will see any game time at all, however, if they were it is a good opportunity for them to get some minutes under their belt.

Does Jamal Musiala get another chance to impress and does Sarr and Nubel also get some valuable first-team minutes? It certainly feels like the right time for some rotation of the squad, however, expect several first-team players to feature to make sure there is no slip up from the current holders.

Predicted XI: Nubel; Sarr, Boateng, Alaba, Hernandez; Roca, Tolisso; Coman, Musiala, Gnabry, Lewandowski.

After their disastrous display against Gladbach, there is no doubt that Hansi Flick will be looking for a response from his side with many of the first team players getting the chance to make amends against the 2. Bundesliga outfit.

Predicted scoreline: Holstein 1-4 Bayern Munich
