The FC Bayern women’s team secured their first victory of the new UEFA Women’s Champions League season. José Barcala’s team defeated Benfica Lisbon 3–0 on the road Wednesday evening.
Following their 2-2 draw against Manchester City in their season opener, the Munich women remain undefeated after the second matchday. With four points, the German champions have put themselves in a strong position for their upcoming matches in the Champions League.
Bayern had to be patient early on in Lisbon. In the first half, the FCB struggled against the Portuguese side and were unable to convert their chances into goals. After the break, however, the visitors stepped up their game significantly.
Bühl puts Bayern on the path to victory
The breakthrough came in the 74th minute. Klara Bühl put Munich ahead 1–0, paving the way for their first Champions League victory of the season.
Then things happened in quick succession. Just six minutes later, Pernille Harder made it 2–0, effectively sealing the victory.
Benfica had no answer to Bayern’s strong second half. Shortly before the end, Franziska Kett finally sealed the deal. The 21-year-old scored in the 88th minute to make it 3–0.
After a difficult first half, the Munich women were rewarded for their improved performance after the break and deservedly took home three points from Portugal.
Now Real Madrid awaits Bayern
With four points from their first two matches, the Bayern women currently sit in fourth place in the Champions League standings. Following the draw against Manchester City, they’ve now secured their first three points.
The next major challenge is just around the corner. On October 28, the Munich women will host Real Madrid at their home stadium, uhlsport PARK.
With another win against the Spanish side, José Barcala’s team could further improve its strong starting position. Following their convincing performance in Lisbon, the Bayern women are heading into the match against Real with momentum on their side.
