Lennart Karl has made rapid progress at FC Bayern in a very short time. The 18-year-old is now a regular on the professional roster and has even made the leap to the German national team. At the same time, his long-term future continues to spark speculation.
One reason for this is Karl himself. At a fan club meeting, the attacking player revealed that Real Madrid is his dream club—remarks that sparked debate among some Bayern fans. Now, Michael Ballack has commented on the matter in more detail.
What’s notable is that Ballack isn’t just speaking as a former Bayern pro and longtime national team player. The 50-year-old is now also Karl’s advisor and is closely guiding his career.
Ballack puts Karl’s Real Madrid comment into perspective
On the Kerners11 podcast, Ballack first clarified the context in which Karl’s much-discussed remarks were made. “He was asked, ‘Who is your favorite club besides FC Bayern?’ People tend to leave that part out.”
Karl himself had explained during the interview: “FC Bayern is a very big club. It’s a dream to play there. But at some point, I definitely want to play for Real Madrid. That’s my dream club—but let’s keep that between us.”
For Ballack, there’s nothing wrong with that in principle. “It wasn’t really a big deal; he was just talking about a dream—that he might want to play for Real Madrid someday.”
Things got interesting afterward when the former Bayern star brought up his own career: “I always had that in the back of my mind, too.”
Real Madrid remains a topic of discussion for Karl
Ballack thus makes it clear that he can understand his protégé’s desire. At the same time, Karl’s publicly expressed dream by no means means that a departure from Munich is imminent.
No concrete transfer is currently being discussed. Nevertheless, these statements are likely to be followed closely, especially since Real Madrid has already been linked to Karl.
Ballack himself sees the youngster’s strong self-confidence as an important prerequisite for his career anyway. “He’s just got personality, and that’s very important. In an environment like FC Bayern, you won’t make it at 17 if you don’t have personality,” explained Karl’s agent.
“That’s the quality young players have today. They need individuality. Sure, they need talent, but they also need qualities that may have been somewhat lost today in their upbringing, in schools, and even at the youth academy.”
In the short term, there’s no indication he’ll be leaving FC Bayern. However, it’s no longer a secret that Karl would love to play for Real Madrid one day. And his agent, Ballack, seems to at least understand this dream.
