In FC Bayern’s 7-0 rout of Union Berlin, Michael Olise once again demonstrated why he has long been one of the German record champions’ top performers. Three goals, an assist, and a penalty he drew made the 24-year-old the standout player at the Allianz Arena.
After the match, Vincent Kompany was asked what actually impresses him most about his star forward. The Bayern coach didn’t single out individual goals, dribbles, or assists. Rather, for him, it’s the combination of soccering class and personality.
“The whole package. The way he plays soccer, but also what kind of person he is. I don’t want to be a ‘fan’ of my players—for me, what matters is what kind of people they are. Michael Olise is the whole package. It’s great to work with players like that. He’s been playing at this level for almost two and a half years; he’s definitely on the right track.”
What’s particularly noteworthy is how matter-of-factly Kompany now speaks about Olise’s consistently high level of performance.
Kompany sees Olise as the “complete package”
Olise is no longer a player who only occasionally draws attention with spectacular plays. Since his transfer from Crystal Palace to FC Bayern in the summer of 2024, the Frenchman has consistently delivered at the highest level.
Against Union, his performance reached a whole new level. For the first time in his club career, Olise scored three goals in a single game. He also set up Kane’s goal to make it 4–0 and drew the penalty that led to Kane’s 100th Bundesliga goal.
His start to the season also underscores his exceptional form. After seven competitive matches, Olise already has eight goals and three assists. Eleven direct goal contributions in seven appearances is an impressive record.
However, Kompany seems to consider Olise’s role within the team to be at least as important as his individual statistics. The Frenchman is publicly regarded as rather reserved. Harry Kane also made it clear after the Union game that the outside perception reflects only part of his personality.
Olise is highly regarded at Bayern
“He’s such a great guy. I know you don’t always see that from the outside, but everyone has their own way of playing soccer and their own style off the field. Playing with Michael is just wonderful,” Kane gushed after the match.
At the same time, Kompany gives his star attacker a great deal of freedom on the field. Olise no longer plays exclusively on the right wing but regularly cuts into the center, where he takes on playmaking duties.
After nearly two and a half years of consistently high-level play, Kompany still doesn’t consider the 24-year-old’s development complete.
His assessment reads more like a preview of things to come: Olise is “definitely on the right track.” After scoring his first hat trick in a club jersey, there can be little doubt at this point where that path might lead.
