Schalke 04 managed to snatch a point from FC Bayern. In the 0-0 draw at the Veltins Arena, the Royal Blues defended passionately for long stretches and kept the record champions scoreless. Coach Miron Muslic was understandably pleased.
While people in Munich are frustrated after the draw at Schalke, the Royal Blues are very pleased with the result.
For Schalke coach Miron Muslic, too, his team’s performance against Bayern was something special. Muslic paid the German record champions a huge compliment: “For me, FC Bayern is the best team in the world—I have to say that very clearly.”
The 44-year-old particularly highlighted his team’s defensive performance. Bayern had a lot of possession for long stretches and created several good scoring chances, but were thwarted by Schalke’s compact defense and goalkeeper Loris Karius.
“There’s no greater compliment for my team than keeping a clean sheet against Bayern,” Muslic emphasized on Sky.
The Schalke coach also felt vindicated that his team had consistently executed the game plan they had developed beforehand: “We had a good game plan and executed it well,” the Schalke coach explained.
“Willingness to suffer”
In addition to the tactical execution, Muslic particularly praised his players’ attitude. Against the clear favorites, Schalke had to defend deep for long stretches and put in an enormous amount of work off the ball.
“That mentality, that attitude, that willingness to suffer, and at the same time that resilience—we showed all of that today,” said Muslic.
From his perspective, the point was therefore well-deserved: “That’s why we deserved the point,” the Schalke coach made clear.
While Bayern dropped points for the first time this season following their 5-1 opening-day win against Stuttgart, Schalke celebrated a respectable result against the German record champions. For the Royal Blues, the 0-0 draw should also provide a good boost of confidence for their upcoming matches.
